It's Friday and a sunny day so everyone has left the building for lunch. Slowly one by one colleagues got up from their chairs and headed towards the lift. It's 12 noon and we are starving. Eve, myself and Jean decided to have Korean food for lunch since it was a so-called farewell party for Eve.
A small restaurant and sandwiched opposite the major Flinders Street station. It gets busier during lunch hours. A few doors away they have opened a Vietnamese restaurant (originally it used to be a Gloria Jeans coffee place). Customers have somehow diverted to having Vietnamese food instead of spicy Korean food. If one is not much of a Kimchi person, then Korean food might not be your cup of tea. Anyway we loved Korean food so it's Kim Chi Tray Restaurant for us.
We decided to share on the variety of dumplings- 3 types- steamed, pan fried and in slight soupy. I have made up my mind to go with Seafood Tofu Stew (Sondubu Tchi-gae), Jean ordered the Chicken Hot Pot Rice and Eve went for the Beef Hot Pot Rice (Bibimbap)
The stone hot pot rice is a bigger portion compared to the lunch style and comes with a nice fried runny egg on top. Each of us have 3 small plates of side dishes (banchan) which consists of julienne steamed potatoes, kimchi and spicy fish cakes. These side dishes can be refilled at anytime.
The boss of the restaurant was impressed that I knew Korean and he kept asking if I watched Descendants of the Sun. Hah! I knew it! It is the drama of the year- everyone is talking about it. Not only he boasts how beautiful Song Hae Gyo is but he also praised his side dishes contain no MSG- home made. He often comes around and ask if we liked the food and if Eve and Jean have more of the gochujang sauce into their Bibimbap.
Jean finds it too spicy but everyone loved the food.
Overall, a nice experience for Korean food especially not too far from work place.
Prices are reasonable.
Variety of dumplings (Mandu)- AU$18.00
Stone Hot Pot rice (Bibimbap)- AU$14.00
Seafood Tofu Stem (Tchigae)- AU$14.00
Food was spicy and good. I have nice seafood in my tofu stew and rice.
The mandu was great- i like the soupy ones as they are small and yummy. It comes with a bit of fresh salad and the sauce! That soy sauce with some vinegarish taste kicks it off!
Not to forget!- Free hot corn tea and water is available for diners.
For K-pop fans, there is always Music Bank program played on the TV.
Location: 2/294 Flinders Ct, Melbourne VIC 3000
It opens daily from 10.00 am to 11.00 pm except for Sunday.
We left the restaurant after pigging out for an hour- we were all so stuffed up after lunch and time to hibernate in the office. He he!
