My thoughts on TVB's Last Healer in Forbidden City.

Over the past few months I have been slacked in watching Hong Kong TVB dramas due to too many K-dramas and variety programs on my watch list. BUT...I had the pleasure to finish all the 20 episodes of Last Healer of Forbidden City 末代御醫. Basically I do like the theme song sung by Hubert Wu- 靈魂的痛.

Anyway back to the drama, Last Healer of Forbidden City story opens whereby the great skillful Royal Physician To Chung (played by Roger Kwok) is shocked upon hearing his friend/Emperor Guangxu (played by Pierre Ngo) has passed away. All rumors were pointing at To Chung stating he failed to treat the ailing Emperor. Then we run back to the time where To Chung started off as a normal Chinese doctor in his clinic. He was kind to all his patients. When he was about wed a concubine into the To family, Fuk Ling (played by Tavia Yeung) was against the marriage and eloped with her lover.

Many years later, Fuk Ling returned to the city and reunited with To Chung but both were greeted with hatred. The rumors went on until to the ears of the Royal Family how great To Chung was in healing sick patients. Empress Dowager Cixi (played by Helena Law) and Emperor Guangxu were also treated by To Chung. To their surprise, they were impressed with his skills. The other Royal Physicians were green with jealousy. They tried many ways to stall him away but with the help of young Physician Yam Sek Gang (played by Stanley Cheung) and the playful Princess Yuen Gai, To Chung's life in palace was better.

Fuk Ling managed to get into the Palace to work as a bone setter to the Empress and Consorts. In fact she has a hidden identity as a revolutionist. Her main aim is to kill off Guangxu and change the country's ruling ways. However To Chung is always there to stop her from making mistakes. She is great in martial arts and have saved To Chung many times. Fuk Ling helps to massage To Chung's crippled wife Pak Hap bound on a wheelchair. Pak Hap gets jealous when she hears To Chung and Fuk Ling are very close together in work and everywhere they go.

Behind the palace doors, Guangxu was like a prisoner when he rebels against Empress Dowager Cixi. The foreigners termed him like a bird in the cage. He hopes to change the country but many were against his ideas. Worst case was Prince Chun was Guangxu's sibling and yet he betrayed him to the end. Guangxu already stricken to death when his favorite Consort Zhen committed suicide from the pressure of the Dowager. To Chung investigates to his shock where Guangxu was not murdered by anyone. In fact the Emperor took his own life after being under house arrest for many years.

Pak Hap was still jealous over Fuk Ling and blames everything on her when things don't go well between her and To Chung. Even though To Chung is concerned a lot for Fuk Ling carrying dangerous tasks but his loyalty to his wife has never wavered. He promised to look after her rest of their life but he doesn't really love her.

Since Emperor Guangxu has passed away, Cixi is bitterly sad that it was mainly her fault being too rigid and strict on her nephew. She then quickly took Prince Chun's little son Puyi to sit on the throne. Prince Chun's high ambition to become Prince Reagent came true but not for long. Warlord Yuan Shi Kai took over and with foreign invasion, the little Emperor Puyi became a puppet on a throne- and as what we have seen in the film The Last Emperor of China.

To Chung left the city and didn't work for the Palace. Instead worked as a life saving doctor in war. There Princess Yuan Kai also helped out and they met Fuk Ling again. The ending didn't show that Fuk Ling went back together with To Chung. To Chung was always looking after Pak Hap and he has never left her.
