Korean's best Sageuk dramas

Costume period dramas are majority long, draggy and sometimes too long winded so it fails to capture the young audience. However there are some costume period dramas (Sageuk) that are rather interesting and not too lengthy.

Here are some of the list of Sageuk dramas which tops my favorite list of all times.

Iljimae (Lee Jun Ki, Han Hyo Joo, Park Shi Hoo,
              Lee Young Ah)

Ah...who can ever resists the bubbly character played by Lee Jun Ki as a typical Robin Hood in the Joseon Dynasty- robbing the corrupted rich nobles to distribute back to the poor. In fact Jun Ki has won big awards for this drama. Short, sweet and nice transformation story of the market bum Yong Ee to the dark prince Iljimae who leaves a painting of a red plum blossom at the scene.
Love...love the action, romance and the climax of the story!

Moon Embraces the Sun (Kim Soo Hyun, Han Ga In, Jung Il Woo)

The fictional drama about a young Prince Lee Hwon who desires to marry the girl, Yeon U but she suffered a mysterious death plotted by the PM, Queen Dowager and the Princess. Eventually Hwon becomes the King and he still yearns for the late Yeon U upon seeing a female Shaman, Wol who bears the striking resemblance. Kim Soo Hyun basically became super famous after this drama and took on many CFs and awards as well.
The child actors Yeo Jin Goo, Im Si Wan, Kim Yoo Jung and Kim So Hyun turned big celebrities overnight because of the characters they played on.

Ju-Mong (Song Il Guk, Han Hye Jin, Kim                      Seung Soo, Song Ji Hyo)
This is a super long Sageuk series of 81 episodes but I managed to watch all of it. It tells the story of the Goguryeo founder Ju-Mong who went through his teen years and suffer with his step-mother and jealous siblings. So his mother Yuhwa sends
Jumong for intensive training and meets 3 robbers- Oi, Mari & Hyupo together with a merchant's daughter Soseono. This drama earned Song Il Guk a Dae-sang award and ratings hitting over 40-50%.

Dong Yi (Han Hyo Joo, Ji Jin Hee, Lee So Yeon, Park Ha Sun, Bae Soo Bin)
Another historical drama on a watermaid, Dong Yi and she became the Queen's favorite while gaining trust from the Jang Hee Bin at the start. Soon she realizes Consort Jang is evil to depose the current Queen so Dong Yi starts her own investigation to set things back the right away. She was friends with the King Sukjong not knowing his identity and their friendship turns sweet as he took her in as a High Court Lady.

Yi San (Lee Seo Jin, Han Ji Min, Lee Sun Jae, Park Eun Hye, Lee Jong Soo)
If you ever heard of Crown Prince Sado- this is a story about his son,Yi San who earned his grandfather's trust and love and became the King. San witnessed his father's own death and vows to find the truth. San likes the humble maid Song Yeon but he is forced to marry another woman Queen Hyo-Eui. Current Princess Ha Won and Queen Jung Sun were the main villains trying to topple down San. With the help of his childhood friends- Song Yeon and Park Dae Su, San was able to become King Jeongjo and he even build Hwaseong Fortress to honour his late father.

King Jeongjo is considered to be a great ruler as he took great interest in building up the military, revamping the economy and politics left to him by his grandfather.

The Princess' Man (Moon Chae Won, Park Shi Hoo, Song Kang Ho, Hong Soo Hyun)

The drama shot Park Shi Hoo to fame where he plays as the handsome scholar-teacher Kim Seung Yu to the Royal Princess. However the Princess decided to switch roles with her cousin, Se Ryeong. Se Ryeong finds herself falling for the tutor when hells break loose as her father Prince Suyang overthrew the government and killed Seung Yu's father who is the General.

A Romeo-Juliet story in the Joseon dynasty...mmm...I find it interesting where Seung Yu is torn between his love for Se Ryeong and his revenge for his late father and brother. I find the child actress Yu Bin who plays as Seung Yu's niece is sooo adorable. She is cute and yet cried so well. Love her!

And of course there are some not-worth while to watch Sageuk dramas or considered the losers and crappy period dramas of all time- ratings were bad and not interesting at all.
Here are some of the poor ratings and boring Sageuk dramas.

Dr. Jin  (Song Seung Hun, Lee Bum Soo, Kim Jae Joong, Park Min Young)
This is a typical lost in transit drama from the past to the future where a gifted neurosurgeon Dr.Jin ended up in the dynasty period. He uses his skills to assist the poor and necessary while meeting with a girl who looks similiar to his dead girlfriend. Though Jaejoong is there as a Kim Kyung Tak guard but his talent is wasted in this drama! Sighs... Meh!! :(

A Nightwatchman's Journal (Jung Il Woo, Go Sung Hee, Jung Yunho)
One of the most terrible Sageuk drama which features poor graphics and rubbish storyline along with the poor women leads casted in it. Jung Il Woo and Yunho did their parts well but the female leads were more of a miserable patch in it. The story went draggy after a few episodes and no chemistry for the main leads. Even the villain rather fake in its power and computer effects lost it! It's a total disaster.

Faith (Lee Min Ho, Kim Hee Sun, Phillip Lee, Park Se Young, Ryu Deok Hwan)
Another time travel story of a plastic surgeon Eun Soo who was taken back to the past through a portal by General Choi Young to help the wounded Princess Nogok. Reluctant to adapt to the lifestyle, Eun Soo had no choice but to survive in the past. Originally Lee Jun Ki was offered the main lead but he turned it down to military committments. Thank god Junki didn't take up the role otherwise it'd be a flop. Though Lee Min Ho's fame managed to capture the audience but Kim Hee Sun didn't nail it through- an older female doctor with a younger General from the past...doesn't make any sense! Bleh!

Cruel Palace- War of Flowers (Kim Hyun Joo, Lee Duk Hwa,Jung Seong Mo)
Nearly 50 episodes of this royal court drama emphasizes a lot on the Royal Concubine Jo Sung Yun. She enters the palace by force to help her family and learns the hard way to earn the love and trust from the useless old King Injo. In fact I give credit to the Crown Prince and Crown Princess who sacrificed themselves to Ming dynasty for the sake of the rubbish King.
Concubine Jo comes in between the King and Crown Prince so she gains the court power and becomes very evil. No doubt Kim Hyun Joo shines beautifully in her colorful hanboks and head pieces but the storyline was rather flat.
