Reviewing movie: Mr. Perfect 백프로 (2014)

Lately there have been too many things going round my head so i decided to watch a light hearted comedy film and I found my way digging into Yoon Shi Yoon's drama before he went to military. Now that Yoon's in 1N2D program and Mirror of the Witch, I should re-run his old dramas too.

Mr. Perfect 백프 is story about a once famous pro-golfer Baek Seh Jin (played by Yoon Shi Yoon) was all suddenly in slump after his hay days. When he was famous and rich, he spends all his money on drinking and partying with models/women at the nightclub. His poor manager runs around hoping to find sponsors and tournaments for him. However Seh Jin didn't learn his lesson instead he was rowdy and drove his manager to death in an unfortunate car accident.

One year later Seh Jin runs away from the fact he has lost his ability to speak and wants to hide from everyone else. His old school principal dragged him to a fishing village island where the villagers were surprised to see a handsome young man as a 'new teacher' in the school where it's at brink of collapse. Unless they do something or get the students to enter the golf tournament, the kids will have nowhere to go. Seh Jin was nicknamed Baek-pro (literally means Mr. Perfect along with his surname as Baek). Everyone tried hard to retain him on the island to teach the kids golf. Reluctant at the start as he cannot speak but soon he pitied the kids and decided to become their home class teacher.

As time passes by, he realizes it wasn't too bad coaching the kids golf. Though they were not at a proper luxurious golf course, but with golf cubs and golf balls available, Seh Jin was able to train the kids to a level where they could soon join the junior golf tournament. Seh Jin discovers one of the older school boy Byung Joo (played by Yeo Jin Goo) is talented and able to grasp the skills as a golf player. Byung Joo is usually quiet and comes from a broken family where his father was a drunkard. One day when one of the villagers found out about Seh Jin's dark past and drink driving accident, the village headman chased them out from the town. The kids pleaded with tears to allow Seh Jin remain as their coach and teacher since he is repenting. Everything was back to normal with Seh Jin training Byung Joo everyday to master everything he needs for his first ever golf tournament.

Byung Joo was very nervous but soon Seh Jin helped to direct him how to score and earn the winning title overthrowing the previous champion! The villagers were thrilled to know the kids have learned something valuable and made everyone proud. However it was time for Seh Jin to return to Seoul. Everyone was sad to know he's leaving for good especially the kids. They have bonded a good relationship with Seh Jin and seeing how he has suffered so much made them realize they have to work harder. Byung Joo was the one who was most affected, his father became supportive of him, he has won the golf tournament but now his mentor is leaving him. The fishermen were supportive over his decision but they will always welcome him back at anytime. As he left on a boat, he looked up at the nearby hill and saw the bunch of children waving goodbye while shedding tears. He teared up as well and suddenly he was able to speak again as he was shouting back to the kids.

3 years later the casts have grown up and matured especially Yeo.
A warm light comedy movie at the start with the villagers but the finale made me teared up when he bid farewell to the wonderful kids he has hung around with, as they have given him the best gift to him. There were comical scenes where in order to prevent Seh Jin from leaving the town, the elders rushed to buy the ferry tickets leaving none for him. And then they go berserk when they have to board the ferry and make one round to come back still seeing Seh Jin at the pier waiting. Hah!

The movie was shot in 2011 however it was only screened out in cinemas on 2014. No wonder everyone looked younger compared to the day when they did the opening premiere 3 years later...
