SBS new drama Yongpal starring Joo Won and Kim Tae Hee has managed to secure its number one spot after broadcasting first 2 episodes on Weds-Thurs.
After its successful previous drama Mask has been on rank 1 past few weeks, it was time Yong Pal took over the slot.
Competing with other dramas such as Scholar Who Walks the Night and Assembly, Yongpal came in number 1 followed by the other two dramas. They came off strong with ratings according to Nielsen Korea, 11.6% nationwide basis. Not bad for a start... I'd give credits mainly to Joo Won since he's always strong in his performance. As everyone knows Kim Tae Hee is a bit weak in her acting skill despite she has a pretty face. Her last Sageuk drama Jang Ok Jung wasn't great either though her opposite Yoo Ah In delivered his role so well. But she has improved a lot so far in the first 2 episodes.
The excellent surgeon Kim Tae Hyeon played by Joo Won will do everything illegal in medical procedure to gain money. This is because he needs the money to cure his sick sister.
Meanwhile a tycoon heiress, Han Yeo Jin played by Kim Tae Hee is in a vegetative state after been placed in a hospital fully monitored by her evil half brother.
For first episode, viewers were drawn to the poor family situation suffered by Kim Tae Hyeon whereby he has to deal with gangsters in order to survive and to visit his younger sister who needs to undergo hemodialysis.
At the same time of Yongpal's broadcast, MBC's Scholar Who Walks The Nigh earned 8.5% in ratings and KBS 2TV's Assembly was on the last spot of 5.3%.
I was expecting Scholar to start hiking up its ratings since Mask has ended and the climax reached when the bloody memorandum has been found after 120 years... pfft! Looks like the viewers in Korea were attracted to the new storyline of Yongpal.
